Teaching Awards:
Criteria and Required Documents

Complete dossiers must be email time stamped November 15 (or before).

  • Current FLAG Membership is required to be eligible for a Teaching Award.
  • An application consists of
    • the General Nomination/Application Form,
    • a resume or CV (max. 5 pages),
    • a recent digital picture of the nominee,
    • statements addressing the items listed below,
    • at least three letters (a maximum of five) which address the items listed (each letter not to exceed two pages in length).
  • Do not send evidence of student work, newspaper articles, or other similar materials.

Teaching Award

This award recognizes teachers who effectively strive to use various strategies, techniques, and materials to enhance the students' interest in, acquisition of, and proficiency in a second language. Two divisions will be recognized: P-12 and Post-Secondary. (Please note: Nominations for these awards will be kept active for two years. Thus a nominee is automatically renominated the following year [unless they decline]).

To be addressed by the nominee:

  • Explain your approach to foreign language instruction.
  • Explain why you believe that you have been successful in the classroom.


Teacher of Promise

This award recognizes teachers in their first, second, or third year of teaching who show the promise to be an outstanding teacher and leader in foreign language education. Two divisions will be recognized: P-12 and Post-Secondary.

To be addressed by the nominee:

  • Explain your foreign language teaching philosophy and describe how you incorporate that philosophy in your instruction.
  • Describe how you advocate for foreign language education and how you would improve foreign language education in your school / university.


For either award, to be addressed in the letters of reference

  1. Evidence of effective planning and implementation of lessons (through plans and/or classroom observations). Nominees should demonstrate a variety of approaches and activities, including warm-up activities, a mixture of new and familiar, transitions between activities, etc.
  2. Evidence of a variety of techniques/approaches in the classroom, commenting on the degree to which the target language is used (exception for Latin), use of media, involvement of all students, method of correction, sufficient practice of all four skills, incorporation of culture and civilization at all levels, etc.
  3. General climate of the classroom and general evidence of effective teaching.
