#1: TPRS Storytelling
Presenter(s):Mary Ann Velasco, Whitewater High School

This workshop will explain the methodology of TPRS Storytelling, a method designed to aid students in second language acquisition. Topics of discussion will be learning versus acquisition, grammar in context and the 7 steps of TPRS.

#2: Catch the National Board Energy
Presenter(s):Linda Braun-Font, Hillside Elementary School and Vicki Welch Alvis, State Bridge Elementary School

Audience:Middle Grades and Secondary
This workshop focuses on helping participants understand the National Board process in WLOE. The presenters have been involved in various aspects of National Board Certification: candidacy, scoring, and certifying. Participants will be actively engaged in taking a close look at the steps toward certification: standards that teachers must document meeting, following portfolio instructions and assessment center exercises. Information will be provided about financial aid possibilities for the application fee, where to find information, and where and when to apply. Handouts will be provided.

#3: French Folk Songs and Music: France and North America

The presenters will teach traditional (folk) songs and music from France and North American and explore some of the possibilities they offer for the French classroom. Participants will be able to select from about 30-35 songs. This presentation will also feature a few traditional tunes from Quebec, France, and Louisiana (fiddle, mandolin, guitar).
Participants should bring a tape or MD recorder in order to take the songs home and to the classroom.

#4: Praxis II workshop (French, German, and Spanish)

This workshop will take you step-by-step through each section of the Praxis II exam. You will learn about proficiency examinations, typical pitfalls, and test-taking strategies, practice tasks similar to those on the exam, and receive feedback on your performance. Recommended for both native and non-native speakers.

#5: Start with the End in Mind: Using Assessment to Guide Instruction in a FLES

This workshop will begin with an introduction to Backwards Planning. Teachers will work in small groups to plan broad objectives and matching assessments for a given unit of instruction and will work backwards to plan a unit, including activities. There will be frequent interaction among participants and opportunities for sharing.

#1: "Monster" Make It / Take It

Workshop participants will develop an instructional aid or Make It / Take It project at various stations led by ESFL Model Program foreign language teachers. Teachers will then divide into breakout groups according to level (elementary, middle, high). These groups will design and develop unit plans for implementation in the classroom based on the Make It / Take It projects.

#2: Ownership, Creativity and Empowerment: Ideas for Transforming Language Learning

The Governors Honors Program foreign language department for the summers for 2003 and 2004 will present an interactive workshop designed to familiarize participants with all aspects of the GHP language program. These incredible teachers will spark your creativity as they demonstrate new and exciting methods to engage your students and keep them in the target language throughout class time. The workshop will include activities suitable for all levels and languages.

#3: Mission Possible: An Effective CIA (curriculum, instruction and assessment)

This workshop is about integrating exceptional students into the foreign language classroom. Several teachers from Cobb County who have had positive experiences with exceptional students will explore curricular concerns, instructional strategies, and traditional and alternative manners of assessment for exceptional students in the language classroom. Special consideration will be given to successful approaches to foreign language instruction for students SPED and 504 plans. Portions of the workshop include why assessment matters, who is the learner, best practices in assessment and classroom management, practice scenarios, and active grading samples
