"Collaborative Lesson Planning Workshop - Planning with GPS"
Presenter(s):Jon Valentine, Georgia Department of Education
Focus:All Language
Audience:All Levels
Review national and state standards and build units to incorporate the 5C's, GPS, and formative and summative assessments. Teachers will present lessons and group members will provide feedback. Units will then be made available to all participants. Participants are urged to bring textbook, favorite lessons, and other planning materials.

#1: "ESFL: Make-N-Take Mania"

Audience:Elementary
Elementary school foreign language teachers team up to share classroom activities that have proven to be meaningful and successful in their classrooms. Each teacher will model an activity at one of eight Make and Take stations. Workshop participants will rotate among the stations, where they will have a chance to make materials to be used in activities that reflect the GA GPS objectives for foreign language, and they will be able to take these materials back to their classrooms.

#2: "Understanding a Foreign Language through its Culture and Food"

During the workshop, participants will be given ideas on how to integrate culture and food in the Foreign Language class and tools to explain the different cultural and historical influences onto the different food items that exist in some of the regions of the French Speaking world.

#3: "The "SENSE-SATIONAL" Classroom"

Make your foreign language class SENSE-SATIONAL by applying the latest brain research and technology. Appeal to the senses by using you-tube (downloaded at home), music, powerpoint, and graphics to teach the language and culture in an integrated program. Samples will be in Spanish, but is applicable to all languages.

#4: " (Be)coming a Digital Citizen: Discovering Classroom 2.0 "

Twitter? Wii? Wiki? Web? What? -- No idea? No problem! This workshop is for the absolute beginner. Discover what the difference is between a blog, a wiki, and a podcast. Find out what makes Web 2.0 different from Web 1.0. Jumping into the digital age can be a scary proposition - come to this session and find out how you can get started and join your students in the wonderful world of classroom 2.0 and the digital age. If possible, bring your wireless internet-enabled laptop to begin exploring Web 2.0 opportunities and be(come) a digital citizen. Attendee is responsible for acquiring his or her own internet access.

#5: "Art for Not Just for Art’s Sake"

This workshop will show you how art can become an exciting tool in teaching both culture and language. This novice art aficionado can show you how he teaches not only an appreciation of Spanish and Latin American art, but also how his students use the language to discuss and compare great works of art. This is not a dull workshop on analyzing art, but rather you will become an artist, a museum guide, go on Web quests, and you too can become Picasso for a day! Regardless of the language that you teach or your artistic ability, you can help give your students an eye for art as well as the ultimate ability to describe the coolest piece of art they have ever seen.

#6: "Widen Differentiation and Increase Instructional Time using Cost Efficient Software Options for Oral Assessment "

Multiple free software options (e.g., Skype, Open Office, Audacity, Wordpress) available to all second language teachers regardless of language or level are presented, demonstrated, and open for participant discussion/use. Research indicates positive results for the software use in the second language classroom for both teachers and students alike. Participants will also be shown how to create rubrics that are aligned with their performance tasks.

#7: "Achieving Success under Stress- Diversifying! "
Presenter(s):Susan Crooks and Jim Sheppard, Kennesaw State University and Screven County High School

The presenters have had successful German programs with student populations that are non-traditional: learning disabled, underachieving, unmotivated, minority, rural. They will share their strategies for attracting students and keeping them beyond second year. Understanding diverse students and encouraging active engagement on the part of students through performance standards are their keys to appealing to a wider audience.
